Acoustic Fest special featuring Irish Pipes player Becky
Taylor and singer songwriter Kirk McElhinney
multi-instrumentalist Becky Taylor Becky is one of the few
female exponents of the Uilleann or Irish Pipes in England
today. Well renowned as a solo performer and teacher, Becky
has performed at folk festivals and events in the UK &
Europe for the last 20 years. Her debut album was released
in December 2002 to critical acclaim throughout the folk
scene. This was followed by the publication of her tunebook
in December 2003 which showcased a selection of compositions
from her unique repertoire.
PENNINE
PIPERHOLICS
Pennine Piperholics is a new self help group for players of
all kinds of pipes where we can meet and come clean.... "My
name is Simon and I'm a piperholic!". The meetings are just
for us to get together and talk about pipes for a couple of
hours, but we also swap tunes, investigate each others
pipes, learn about different kinds of pipes, help sort
problems. Occasionally meeting will have themes.
We meet at the Fox and
Goose Inn in Hebden Bridge, HX& 6AZ, where the owner, Simon,
is a keen Uilleann piper currently learning under the
tutelage of Becky Taylor, who along with Simon and local
piper Mark Dixon, is a founder member and a regular
attendee. So far we have had visits from local pipers of
various colours- Uilleann, Small, Border, English and some
strange continental things!!
The meetings are on the
2nd Thursday of the month, and as we are currently on a
short summer break, the next one is on the 13th of
September, when we will be concentrating on reedmaking.
Anyone from NWUP who would
like to attend this or any future meeting will be most
welcome.

28th July 2005 - SWAUP Tionol Announced
Here are the details of the South Western Pipers’ 2005 Tionol
which is to be held on the 11th - 13th November 2005. For piping
tuition, we are delighted to be able to welcome back Brian
McNamara who proved to be a wonderful teacher and a great guy at
the
2004 Tionol. Brian’s playing is a delight to listen to, and his
teaching skills ensure that everybody goes home with something
new to practise and think about. For the reedmaking classes, we
very much hope to be able to welcome back our resident reed
guru, Alan Burton.
The venue will be the Bossiney House Hotel which is located in
Tintagel, North Cornwall, near to King Arthur’s castle. The
hotel is very comfortable and we will have the whole hotel to
ourselves for the weekend. There will be both single and shared
rooms on offer. The hotels website can be viewed at:
Bossiney House Hotel
It is estimated that the total cost for the weekend, including
all meals, board and tuition will be close to £150 (there will
be a small supplement for single rooms). The final cost will be
influenced by numbers attending the weekend.
For further details, please contact Edwin Spring (contact
details at
